Abraham Flexner Excellence in Medical Education

The UK COM developed the Abraham Flexner Excellence in Medical Education Award to acknowledge and encourage excellence in education. Since 1994, the College of Medicine has recognized an impressive group of educators at the annual Fall Academic Convocation.  Faculty members receive this award for outstanding contributions to the educational program and mission in one or more of the following areas:

  • Teaching
  • Leadership
  • Innovation
  • Evaluation
  • Development

Applications

We invite faculty of all specialties and academic rank to apply.  Fulfillment of the criteria in one or more award categories is required in order to be eligible for recognition. All applicants must adequately document contributions in education related to the desired award category and equivalent to the sample activities listed. Academy of Medical Educators Abraham Flexner Excellence in Medical Education Award Committee reviews all applications and determines whether the application meets the criteria for each award.

Within each category, faculty members must document relevant contributions to the College of Medicine and faculty development participation pertinent to the award category.  The lists that follow each category description are not exhaustive, but provide examples from past applications.  All applications must consist of the following:

  • Cover letter documenting the award category areas for which you seek recognition, and a brief summary of your contributions in each area.
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Reflective Statement
  • Teaching Portfolio
  • List and description of faculty development participation
  • Supporting documents for each award category (as listed below)

Teaching: This award recognizes faculty members who document sustained quality, quantity, and diversity of direct instruction throughout the educational program. Applicants must document significant faculty development participation pertinent to teaching, and contributions in teaching of different types in order to establish breadth and depth of excellence in this area.

Examples:

  • Teaching by multiple methods (small group, large group, etc.)
  • Teaching in multiple courses/clerkships/programs
  • Teaching at multiple levels (medical, graduate, resident, or peer)
  • Mentoring of fellows, residents, graduate students, and/or medical students

Application Supporting Documents:

  • Student and/or resident teaching evaluation summary consisting of at least two years of data and from at least two different courses or experiences (two undergraduate courses, one undergraduate and one graduate course, two medical school classes, or a medical school class and a residency rotation)
  • Letter of support from at least two learners (student, resident and/or fellow) describing your unique contributions to their education

Leadership: This award recognizes faculty members who document a broad array of leadership skills or proficiency in the administration of educational programs. Applicants must document significant faculty development participation pertinent to leadership and administration, and contributions in at least three activities of different types in order to establish breadth and depth of excellence in this area.

Examples:

  • Course/clerkship/residency/graduate program director for at least two years
  • Departmental education committee member (e.g., steering committee, graduate student committee, clinical competency committee, etc.)
  • College of Medicine education committee member (e.g. Curriculum Committee, Student Progress and Promotions Committee or Admissions Committee)
  • Editor of a journal related to teaching and education
  • Education association or society leadership, including committee or subcommittee leadership

Application Support:

  • Letter of support from departmental or college leadership describing your contributions to the educational committee/program mission for each category

Innovation: This award recognizes faculty members who document significant improvements that they made in a course/clerkship/program. Applicants must document significant faculty development participation pertinent to curriculum development, and evidence of activities in different areas or a substantial contribution in a single area.

Examples:

  • Design and development of a new course or substantial modification (major revision) of existing course material
  • Design of a significant new assessment within a course
  • Design and development of a series of educational experiences for students and residents
  • Completion of training related to curriculum design

Application Supporting Documents:

  • Letter of support from departmental or college leadership describing your contributions to the educational committee/program mission for each category

Evaluation: This award recognizes faculty members who document substantial contributions in educational research or evaluation. Applicants must document significant faculty development participation pertinent to educational evaluation and/or research, and contributions in at least three activities of different types in order to establish breadth and depth of excellence in this area.

Examples:

  • Publication of educational research innovation
  • Publication of the evaluation of an educational program or initiative
  • Publication(s) reviewer of at least 5 education research or evaluation manuscripts
  • Substantial contributions to education research and evaluation through grant and/or contract activity

  • Published manuscript
  • Listing and description of manuscripts reviewed
  • Award notification of grant and/or contract activity

Development: This award recognizes faculty members who contribute to the educational development of other faculty members. Applicants must document significant faculty development participation pertinent to creating faculty development opportunities, and contributions in at least two activities of different types in order to establish breadth and depth of excellence in this area.

Examples:

  • Conduct faculty development presentations, workshops, or grand rounds regarding education (e.g., conduct workshops for colleagues on problem-based learning, clinical teaching, test item writing)
