Specialty and Criterion-Based Scholarships

There are various awards given to students based upon specific criteria such as county of origin and career specialty interests.

Dr. Roger Darrell Akers Memorial 
Awarded to entering first-year student, with preference given to resident of Floyd County; FAFSA required (renewable)

Peter Ardery 
Awarded to third- and/or fourth-year student who wishes to pursue a medical rotation in another country and has financial need (not renewable)

R. Quin Bailey, MD
Awarded to a first-year Kentucky student; based on academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, and interest in the practice of Primary Care (renewable)

Harry King and Nelle Buttermore
Awarded to an entering first-year student; based on academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, (FAFSA required); preference given to resident of Kentucky from an Appalachian county (renewable)

Charles G. and Edith J. Dickerson

One award is made to a rising fourth-year medical student. Each of the UK health care colleges nominates one student based on academic excellence, financial need (FAFSA required), and practice interest in Primary Care in an underserved area in Kentucky (no actual service commitment required). Applications are solicited by Financial Aid.

Jonas Fields Scholarship Fund
May be awarded to a medical student who is a U.S. citizen and member of a group that is disadvantaged/underrepresented in population; has demonstrated financial need (FAFSA required); and has shown satisfactory academic progress (one year or renewable)

 Jenny Caldwell Ford and Marguerite Geneva Ford
Preference given to women who were born in Kentucky and are residents of the state at the time of application for scholarship. Further information: http://www.cflouisville.org/

Emily Neil Griggs Memorial
Awarded to a third-year or fourth-year student; based academic excellence; financial need (FAFSA required); and practice interest in Oncology (not renewable)

 James F. Hile Medical
Awarded to an entering first-year student; based on academic excellence; interest in General/Family Medicine (no actual service commitment required) (renewable)

 Kentucky Medical Association Alliance Fund
Awarded to third- and fourth-year students; based on academic excellence; preference for a resident of Kentucky with intent to practice in Kentucky (no actual service commitment required) (not renewable)

 Madison County Medical Society Scholar 
Awarded to a second-year student; based on academic excellence, financial need, primary preference to Madison County resident, secondary preference to resident of counties surrounding Madison County in central Kentucky, and strong interest in Primary Care.

Dr. W.C. and Sara McCauley
Awarded to second year, third year, fourth year medical students; based on academic excellence; financial need (FAFSA required); preference for resident of Woodford County (not renewable)

Medical Center Enhancement Scholarship
May be awarded to medical students to promote diversity in the College of Medicine; good academic standing

 J. Lester Miller
Awarded to an entering first-year student; based on academic excellence; financial need (FAFSA required); preference for a resident of Madison County (two-year scholarship)

Paul E. Miller and Judith Sebastian-Miller Fellowship
Awarded to a entering first-year student; minimum 3.0 GPA; financial need (FAFSA required); preference for a native of Fayette County or contiguous counties) (renewable)

 Ethelyn O'Neal Fellowship
Award to a first-year student, based on the following preferences:
1. Graduate of high schools in Union County with practice interest in the city of Sturgis (Union County)
2. Graduate of high schools in Union County with practice interest in Union County
3. Graduate of high schools in Union County
4. Graduate of high schools in Crittenden, Webster or Hopkins counties with practice interest in any of the three counties

Dr. C. Edward and Betty Jane Rankin
Awarded to an entering first-year Kentucky student; academic excellence; interest in Primary Care (renewable)

Michael D. Rankin, MD Community Scholarship
May be awarded to an medical student who is a resident of a rural county in Kentucky, with preference for Boyle, Casey, Garrard, Lincoln or Mercer counties, and who has an agricultural background; good academic performance; financial need (FAFSA required) (renewable)

Rural Kentucky Medical Scholarship Fund

Awarded to an entering first-year student; based on academic excellence; native of Kentucky from Madison, Breathitt or Johnson counties; demonstrated financial need (FAFSA required) (renewable)

Awarded to an entering first-year student; based on academic excellence; native of Kentucky from Madison, Breathitt or Johnson counties; financial need (FAFSA required) (renewable)

Eloise C. Smith and Dr. E. Vernon Smith Medical Scholarship
Awarded to a medical student(s) based on academic excellence; resident of Greenup County, and commitment to a minimum of five service years of medical practice following completion of degree requirements and any post-doctoral training. Non-compliance of the scholarship agreement does require that the scholarship be repaid in full as a loan. Application required.

 Stevens Orthopaedic Fellowship
Awarded to rising second-year student; based on academic excellence, financial need, and submission of letters of recommendation from Orthopaedic Surgery faculty members or research abstract. Application required.

Dr. and Mrs. James A. Sutherland, Sr. Memorial
Awarded to a rising third-year student; academic excellence; demonstrated leadership ability in the College of Medicine (not renewable)

 Helen R. Westman, MD 
Awarded to an entering first-year Kentucky student; preference for women with financial need (FAFSA required) (renewable)

Awarded to a woman in the third year; FAFSA required (not renewable)

John B. and Brownie Young Scholarship
