College of Medicine class of 2017 learns of residencies at Match Day

On Friday, March 17, the College of Medicine held its annual Match Day ceremony for the class of 2017 at the Keeneland Entertainment Center. As part of The National Resident Matching Program Match Day, graduating medical students learned where they will complete their residency training, which can last anywhere from three to seven years.

After opening an envelope with the match results, each student announced their residency specialty on stage and then placed a pin in the city of their residency on a U.S. map.

The 2017 match participants spanned 23 specialties. The top specialties are as follows:

  • Emergency Medicine – 10%
  • Internal Medicine – 10%
  • Anesthesiology – 9%
  • Pediatrics – 9%
  • Family Medicine – 8%
  • General Surgery – 7%
  • Psychiatry – 5%
  • Med/Peds – 5%
  • Neurology – 5%
  • Obstetrics/Gynecology – 5%
